Sun- and Time Path 2000
in Heidenheim an der Brenz
home the design description execution chronology
The Heidenheim sundial shows the time by means of a shadow cast by a fixed rod.
Yes, and ? This is something every sundial is capable of doing - if the sun is shining.
True ! But the Heidenheim sundial can do much more.
This makes it a unique structure.

What else can it do ?

Let us have a look  at the model ...

The complete structure consists of three parts:

- the horizontal sundial,
- the sun path (indicates the current season and the signs of the zodiac)
and
- the time path (shows 5000 years of European history).

This combination makes the Heidenheim sundial unrivalled!
With it Heidenheim has received a unique landmark that will serve as a calling card well beyond the year 2000.

The complete structure is nearly 31 meters (approx. 100 ft.) long and 13 meters (approx. 43 ft.) wide.
It has wheelchair access and braille inscriptions.
The gnomon (rod) is about 5 meters (approx. 16 ft.) high.
At its tip one finds the celestial sphere with a blue globe in the middle. This symbolizes our earth, the blue planet.

Where do I find the Heidenheim sundial?

Next to the future provincial garden show, directly at the shore of the river Brenz, in the county of Schnaitheim.

This sounds really good. Can I learn more about it?

With pleasure!
